Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Ghana National Gas Company have announced a planned five-hour shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant to undertake urgent system restoration works. In a joint statement issued on April 19, the two institutions said the temporary shutdown is required to replace a damaged Burner Management System (BMS), a critical safety and operational component of the facility. According to the statement, the fault was first detected on April 15 and caused extensive damage to the system’s controller, necessitating a complete replacement to restore full functionality. The companies indicated that preparatory works for the replacement are nearly complete, with about 90 percent of the required processes already executed. The final phase will require a shutdown of the plant from midnight to 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026. They also emphasized that contingency arrangements have been implemented to minimise disruptions to consumers and the broader electricity supply chain during the maintenance window. “We remain committed to maintaining a stable and reliable power supply,” the statement said, while acknowledging the potential inconvenience the exercise may cause. The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant is a strategic asset in Ghana’s energy infrastructure, supplying processed gas to power generation plants across the country. Industry observers note that while short-term shutdowns may pose operational challenges, routine maintenance and timely system upgrades are essential to ensuring long-term reliability, efficiency, and stability in the power sector.
